⚡ Executive Takeaway
We asked five questions of earnings season, and J&J just answered the one underneath all of them: what does the market pay for growth it already understands? Nothing, and on Tuesday it charged for it. Here is the part not in the bullets above: nearly all of the quarter's pharmaceutical growth came from two products, Darzalex and Tremfya, which together added roughly $1.5 billion year over year by our arithmetic on the release, while the one genuinely new launch, Icotyde, arrived on the call as prescriber counts and a $10 billion ambition but has no revenue line in the release at all. That gap is the rubric for the next three weeks. A beat built on mature assets, cost control, and tax lines clears at a discount; the premium is reserved for whoever shows the replacement curve inside the actual table. And note what J&J itself did about its own gap this quarter: closed Firefly, signed Sail, took the impairment without blinking. The companies that grade best this season will be the ones buying their third curve while the window stays open, not the ones describing it.

💉 Earnings
J&J beat, raised, and cleared 5.7% lower, because the growth came from the oldest parts of the new portfolio. JNJ
Sales grew 5.9% to $25.4 billion, with Innovative Medicine up 7.7% even as Stelara fell 54.4% to $716 million, a 690 basis point drag by the company's own math. Darzalex, up 15.4% to $4.24 billion, and Tremfya, up 68.3% to $2.40 billion, carried the segment, while MedTech grew just 2.5%, about 2% below consensus per Leerink and Guggenheim commentary via BioSpace. Reported EPS of $0.09 reflects a $5.5 billion pre tax charge tied to the proposed talc litigation resolution, and full year guidance rose six cents to an $11.10 adjusted EPS midpoint. The close, down 5.7% on a flat tape, is the first grading under the clearing price framework we set Monday; the full scorecard is in today's Pro brief.
⚖️ Litigation and Market Access
Liquidia bought total peace with United Therapeutics for $380.7 million, and the price included an indication. LQDA | UTHR
After Tuesday's close, Liquidia announced a global settlement ending all six pending litigations with prejudice: $175 million net within 30 business days, two $72.7 million installments through April 2027, and $60.3 million this month to antitrust claimholders, $380.7 million net in total, per the release. Yutrepia stays on the market for PAH without disruption, but Liquidia will not appeal September's '327 patent ruling and will remove the PH-ILD indication from the label, leaving the larger inhaled treprostinil pool to United Therapeutics. With preliminary Q3 Yutrepia net sales of $222.7 million and $396.1 million in cash, Liquidia says it can fund the peace without new financing. Wednesday is the first reaction session for both stocks.
🫁 Respiratory
One day after Bristol Myers kept one of two IPF doses alive, Syndax exited the disease entirely. SNDX | INCY
Syndax said its Phase 2 Maxpire trial of Niktimvo, the anti CSF-1R antibody it shares with Incyte, did not slow lung function decline versus placebo over 26 weeks in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and it is ending IPF development; no figures were disclosed. The cGVHD franchise and both frontline GVHD readouts are unaffected, and Jefferies called IPF an offshoot of the core story. The field read is the point: in a disease whose approved incumbents are tolerability limited, LPA1 antagonism survived last week at one of two doses with figures withheld, and CSF-1R blockade is now out. SNDX fell 15.7%; INCY slipped 2.5%.
🧪 Oncology
BioNTech's BNT113 missed progression free survival, and fixed antigen mRNA lost its lead shot on goal. BNTX
In the Phase 3 part of AHEAD-MERIT, BNT113 plus pembrolizumab did not improve progression free survival over pembrolizumab alone in first line metastatic HPV16 positive head and neck cancer, missing one of two dual primary endpoints. The independent data monitoring committee recommended continuing for overall survival, and a positive OS result would still make the trial positive under its design; BioNTech's chief medical officer said the drug is engaging its intended mechanism. BMO analysts are now significantly less confident in the OS answer, per Fierce Biotech, and BioSpace counts this as the company's third mRNA setback, leaving the personalized vaccine approach Merck and Moderna are running as the field's live hypothesis. BNTX fell 7.1%.
🧬 Obesity and Metabolic
Roche paid nine figures up front for a preclinical Chinese obesity target, the same day a dosed oral GLP-1 went looking for a partner. RHHBY | BMEA
Roche licensed Rona Therapeutics' RNAi candidate against ALK7, an adipose selective target human genetics ties to lower waist to hip ratios, for $100 million in upfront and near term payments plus up to $1.06 billion in milestones, per the companies; GSK, Alnylam, and Novo are already working on the target. After the close, Biomea's BMF-650, a once daily oral GLP-1 agonist, posted Day 29 weight loss of 1.5% to 3.2% in outpatient cohorts against 0.1% for pooled placebo, and 6.1% in a small confined cohort the company itself says to read separately, with every adverse event mild or moderate and no drug related discontinuations. Biomea will seek a partner for late stage development; Wednesday is the first reaction session. Pfizer joined the same deal tape with a Sec61 protein degradation pact with Enodia worth over $500 million, per BioSpace.
🤖 Medtech
Soft tissue robotics found three scaled challengers in a week, and the consumables underneath them drew a $2.1 billion bid. SYK | STE | MDT
Stryker invested about $400 million in CMR Surgical with exclusive US sales rights to the Versius system and an exclusive option to acquire the company, per MedTech Dive's reporting of Monday's announcement, days after J&J's OTTAVA won FDA market authorization as what its release calls the first table integrated soft tissue robotic system. STERIS agreed Monday to buy Xodus Medical, a patient positioning and laparoscopic consumables maker, for $2.1 billion, about $1.8 billion net of tax benefits, with roughly $245 million in expected 2026 sales, per the same outlet's reporting of the release. On the MiniMed split off, Tuesday's amended filing reaffirmed the preliminary 18.3% proration with the final factor due promptly after the guaranteed delivery period ends; the pre distribution MiniMed tape closed at 18.40, and we run the arithmetic in today's Pro.
